A simple guide to Destiel fanfiction including the basics of fanfiction plus recommended fics, recommended writers, fic rec masterposts, destiel fanfiction blogs, etc, etc…
Okay, so this is a guide for those newcomers and even maybe those who haveve been in the fandom for awhile. If you are a newcomer keep reading here, but if you are just looking for recommended fanfiction, you can scroll down to part two. :)
Part 1 - basics (ratings, warning, etc.)
Part 2 - where to find fics and the classics
Part 3 - everything else (destielfic blogs, recommended writers, fic master posts, etc, etc…)
The first thing newcomers should know is that there are certain ratings given to fics. These ratings sorta work how movie ratings (Ex, G, PG-13, R) do. Them most common way to rate fics are Kid, Kid+, Teen, Mature, and Explicit (NC-17). A large portion of Destiel fanfiction is NC-17, so if you don’t like reading that, make sure to ALWAYS check the rating so you won’t accidentally run into it and be scarred for life. Though a lot is NC-17, it’s mainly T/PG-13/PG. :P
Warnings are also commonly given in fic descriptions. Here are the most common that I’ve seen, but there are lots more.
Now that we have covered the basics, you can move onto part two. :)
There are numerous sites where you can post or read Destiel fanfiction. The 2 links below will redirect you to some sites with the last updated fics.
Those sites are both very common places to find fanfiction, but Tumblr is also a very good place to find new works.
Usually, tumblr fics are shorter. Longer fics are usually found on LiveJournal, AO3, and Fanfiction.net. These are several “classics” that nearly everyone reads:
300 Things by cautionzombies
Summary: Dean’s life at twenty-four makes him feel like he’s forty—he works two jobs to help pay bills for his house and put his genius little brother through private school, and has spent six years (on and off, let’s be honest) working on his mechanical engineering degree at KU. With so much of his life devoted to his family, Dean has little time in his schedule for class and no time for social interaction. Then, while getting his classes together for the fall, he finds himself in a do-or-die situation: He must take his last literature class now, his spring already filled with those left for his major…except that none of the English classes will fit his schedule. This is how Dean grovels and begs Dr. Castiel Milton to make a special arrangement for him, and Dr. Milton does.

Summary: Jesus Christ is dead. Somehow, that isn’t the worst part of Dean’s week.
In This Secluded Spot As I Wouldn’t Dare Elsewhere by rhymephile
Summary: It’s 1995, and Castiel’s high school years are destined to be difficult: home-schooled until eighth grade, he is awkward, shy, and socially inept. The weird kid with the funny name would rather isolate himself and draw in his sketchbook than deal with the constant bullying he faces every day. Things only get worse in his junior year when he excels in home economics class, leading the captain of the baseball team, Alastair, to start taunting him for being gay.
Redemption Road by spn_redemption
Summary: With Castiel having set himself up as the new God, drunk on power and volatile as a nuclear reactor, Dean, Sam, and Bobby find themselves on the run from the jealous, capricious monster wearing the face of their friend. Desperate for protection and wary of his brother’s mental state since Castiel unlocked Sam’s memories of Hell, Dean knows Castiel must be defused before he can wreak further havoc in Heaven or on Earth. Although Bobby advocates for destroying Castiel by whatever means necessary, Dean is convinced the Cas he once knew still remains, buried somewhere beneath the mass of poisonous souls and calling out for help. Determined to save the angel who once rescued him from Hell and redefined his purpose in life, Dean himself must resist the allure of the false deity vying for his obedience, and come to terms with the knowledge, long-suppressed, that his feelings for Castiel run much deeper than brotherhood. It is this bond, and the dubious distinction of the Righteous Man, that will ultimately grant Dean access to where Castiel’s grace languishes in Purgatory. However, what Dean brings back with him is broken, angry, and only half-angel, certainly not the Castiel he remembers—and nor is it the only thing that returns to Earth with them… (A fan-written virtual season 7 penned by some of the best authors in Dean/Cas fandom with gorgeous accompanying episode art.)
The Ghosts of Blackthorn Hall by linoresearch

Set deep among the Yorkshire moors, Blackthorn is a place of mysteries – a wild place, where pale faces appear at the windows, and mad women laugh in the night. Castiel is drawn to the enigmatic Master of Blackthorn and they form an attachment neither of them expected. But there are secrets hidden behind Blackthorn’s stone walls, truths that threaten to destroy their fragile happiness, as they are forced to confront the ghosts of their past. This is a Jane Eyre/SPN fusion AU, written for the Dean/Castiel Big Bang 2012.
Waves by wormstaches
Summary: Dean Winchester is the average guy: football, college, kid brother, nice car, girls and beer; his life is black and white, that is until he meets Castiel Collins: pretentious, slutty, sweater-wearing genius, who won’t even take the time to look up at him from his obscure novel while he insults him. And then everything is shades of gray and Dean is drowning.
Twist and Shout by gabriel, standbyme
Summary: What begins as a transforming love between Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak in the summer of 1965 quickly derails into something far more tumultuous when Dean is drafted in the Vietnam War. Though the two both voice their relationship is one where saying goodbye is never a real truth, their story becomes fraught with the tragedy of circumstance. In an era where homosexuality was especially vulnerable, Twist and Shout is the story of the love transcending time, returning over and over in its many forms, as faithful as the sea.
Point Pleasant by chainedtoacomet
Summary: Dean Winchester grew up in the idyllic town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. A terrifying encounter with the supernatural during his childhood shaped his worldview and served as the catalyst for his successful career as a bestselling horror writer. Dean left Point Pleasant at the age of twenty, driven from his hometown by rejection and heartbreak, but thirteen years after abandoning his home and family, Dean finds himself drawn back to the town by the promise of investigating the apparent reemergence of the supernatural creature responsible for Dean’s childhood nightmares. Once back in Point Pleasant, Dean is confronted not only by the town’s resident monster, the Mothman, but also by his childhood best friend, Castiel Novak. Together, with Bobby Singer—the old drunk who lives on the edge of town—Dean and Castiel uncover the mystery of Point Pleasant’s Mothman in all its terrifying reality. Point Pleasant is a horror story, but aims to show that the ghosts that haunt us are sometimes made of flesh and blood. And sometimes, they lead us home. (The author of this book has adapted it into a published novel, which means that she had to take down the original work. You can either buy the book, or message me for a pdf version.)
If you still haven’t found what you are looking for, you should head over to destielfanfic. They regularly recommend fics and find lost ones if you are in search of them. Also, check out their intro guide to destiel. :)
I’m assuming this next blog is shut down because it hasn’t been updated in a year, but deancasficrecs has some recommended fics. None of them are new, but you can look through the old ones to see if you find any you like.
